The inaugural meet was organized in the Govt Inst of
Rehabilitation Medicine Chennai. Around 20 physiatrists took
part. The following academic activities were carried out:
- A
lecture by Dr. T.J.Renganathan, a senior Physiatrist from
Coimbatore on practical management of neck pain in a
clinical setting was very informative.
- A
video presentation of pre and post Botox for cerebral
palsy children was presented by Dr.M.Feroz Khan.
- Practical
methods to take foot board moulds to correct foot
deformities in adults and children were presented by the
same authors.
- Management
discussion of an adult male with congenital
pseudoarthrosis of tibia who had undergone 12 surgeries
(x-ray below), was thought provoking.
An
educational video of introduction to chronic pain management
with spinal segmental block by Prof. Andrew Fischer (USA) was
screened.
This
was followed by a lunch hosted by Messers Mohana Orthotics of
Chennai.
The
second meeting was held on dec 2005 in Saveetha College of
Physiotherapy hosted by Dr.Jai Shankar.
The
following activates were held.
1.Case
presentation of a child amputee with congenital skeletal limb
deficiency with prosthetic rehabilitation.
2. Feroz
Khan suggested a protocol for developing a evaluation and
treatment guidelines in physiatrists point of view for
periarthritis of shoulder with the participants using Delphi
statistical analysis and the proposal was accepted, soon the
materials will be sent to the participants for conducting the
study.
3. The ICF
classification (International Classification of Functioning
and Disability) mult-icenter trial conducted by WHO and the
Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, University
of Munich will be carried out by APGI (Academic Physiatrist
Group of India) for Stroke patients. The low back pain study
will be done in collaboration with Dr.Soundarapandian Bone and
Joint Research Institute Chennai. Dr.Feroz Khan, who is
trained in Munich for ICF classification will be coordinating
the studies. This is will be god recognition to our group in
international arena.
Dr.Prof.
C.Thiyagrajan, a senior Physiatrist attached to Stoke
Mandeville Spinal Cord Injury Center, Ayelsbury, U.K. was in
Chennai lately. He has joined our group and has kindly donated
the financial commitment for the website and we are all
grateful to him. Thanks Boss!!!
In
addition, he will look into the possibilities tele-rehab
facilities free to disable population to help in improving
management and research work at international level.
There are
still lots of activities down the line. We have made a humble
beginning and hope to grow further and faster to be in par
with other specialties, which are developing in rocket speed.

memberships will be offered initially only to qualified
physiatrists, who wish to be active academically with no
specialty overlap.
